Welcome to Infrastructure as Prompt
TL;DR: IaC got us here, but IaP will take us further. This blog will explore how AI and natural language can revolutionize infrastructure management.
Welcome to Infrastructure as Prompt (IaP)
Welcome to Infrastructure as Prompt (IaP), a space dedicated to exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and infrastructure management. As we enter a new era of cloud computing, the way we handle infrastructure is evolving rapidly, and AI is at the forefront of this transformation.
Why IaP?
I fell in love with automating infrastructure long before Infrastructure as Code (IaC) was a thing. In fact the first scripts I wrote to automate F5 BIG-IP devices utilized SOAP APIs. This was before we had tools like Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, and Pulumi and way before the dawn of DevOps and Platform Enginnering.
These movements actually re-energized me and drove me to learn new techniques and even new languges (looking at you golang).
Like all things though there comes a time where technology pushes us to change. I’ve seen infrastructure evolve from hand-written scripts to full-blown declarative languages, and now, we’re on the edge of something entirely new.
In todays AI-driven world we are no longer focused on the code, instead it is all about sharing the "vibe" (your intent, your goals, your desired state) with AI and waiting for the result. This "vibe" or "prompt" is really the new code hence "IaP" was born in my head. As it turns out I didn't coin the name or the idea, but once again I am excited by the movement. So much so that I want to share what I learn with the world.
But why change?
Let's be real, Infrastructure as Code and the existing tools are not always easy or friendly. In fact at times they are more difficult to use than coding an automation by hand. It’s no surprise tools like Pulumi emerged—to make infrastructure coding feel more like real software development. The goal is to remove these pain points:
- Complex DSL (Domain Specific Language) learning curves
- Rigid state management requirements
- Limited ability to understand intent
- Maintenance overhead
IaP represents a paradigm shift in how we approach these challenges. By leveraging AI tools and natural language processing, we can create more intuitive, flexible, and powerful ways to manage our infrastructure.
Imagine no more HCL, YAML or JSON to wrangle. Declarative shmarative..."Why don't you just tell me what your VPC should look like?"
